Hi, I've owned a '91 BMW 318i for about 5 months now and clocked about 7000 miles (currently @ 168XXX) so far as a daily. For the last month or so I've noticed that there is a rattle that is coming from the rear that sounds like it could be something wrong with some bushings, suspension or something along those lines. I was wondering if anyone had any idea what the problem could be before I start diving in and replacing parts.
Start by noticing when the rattle is happening. When you shift? When you go over a bump? This will help narrow down what part is making the noise. Could be suspension components or drive line components like your rear diff bushing, center support bearing or flex disc.
